How to Rank #1 in Google Maps for Your Handyman Business
(Complete Webinar Recap + Q&A)
If your phone isn’t ringing…
If you’re not sure why a competitor is outranking you…
Or if you’re wondering whether Google is even worth it anymore…
This training broke it all down.
We covered:
What “ranking” actually means
The 3 pillars of Google Maps SEO
How to optimize your Google Business Profile
When (and when not) to open a second location
Real-world troubleshooting from live Q&A
Let’s walk through it step by step.
First: Why Google Maps Still Matters (Yes, Even with AI)
There’s a lot of noise about AI replacing Google.
Here’s reality:
Google still dominates search.
Homeowners use Google when they need something.
Google Maps (your Google Business Profile) is often the first thing people see — not your website.
Social media is for entertainment.
Google is for intent.
When someone types:
“Handyman near me”
“Ceiling fan installation Indianapolis”
“Deck repair Rogers AR”
They’re looking to hire.
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is your new homepage.
The 3 Pillars of Ranking in Google Maps
Google Maps rankings are built on three core factors:
Proximity
Relevance
Prominence
Let’s break each down.
1️⃣ Proximity: How Close You Are to the Searcher
This is the simplest pillar.
Google knows:
Where the homeowner is.
Where your business is verified.
The closer you are, the more likely you rank.
Important Notes:
Even if you hide your address, Google still uses it internally.
Where you verified your profile = your ranking “center.”
In rural areas, you can rank 15–30+ miles out.
In major metros (Dallas, LA, etc.), ranking radius shrinks due to competition.
Smart Growth Strategy
If you’re scaling:
Opening a second location 15–20+ miles away can expand ranking territory.
But only if it’s legitimate and operational (more on that below).
What NOT to Do
Don’t open fake locations just to “outsmart” Google.
Don’t use PO Boxes.
Don’t create duplicate listings too close together.
Google suspends aggressively.
2️⃣ Relevance: Does Your Business Match the Search?
This is the most controllable factor.
And most handyman businesses get this wrong.
🔑 Your Primary Category MUST Be “Handyman”
Not:
General Contractor
Contractor
Repair Service
Even if you’re licensed.
Why?
Because:
“Handyman near me” has the highest search volume.
That’s where the calls are.
Use remodeling, plumber, electrician, etc. as secondary categories — but lead with Handyman.
Secondary Categories That Work
Depending on services:
Plumber
Electrician
Fence Contractor
Deck Builder (for deck repair too)
Gutter Cleaning
Appliance Repair
Home Cinema Installation (best category for TV mounting)
You can add up to 10.
Primary is strongest. Secondaries support.
Fully Optimize Your Google Business Profile
Here’s your checklist:
✔ Business Description
Authentic.
Personal.
No generic AI fluff.
Show personality.
✔ Service Areas
Make sure no random cities are added.
Remove accidental out-of-state listings.
✔ Business Hours
Use real hours.
Especially important if running Local Service Ads.
✔ Reviews
This is huge.
Google tracks:
Total number
Consistency (velocity)
Content richness
Shoot for:
👉 1 review per week
Encourage customers to:
Mention the service performed.
Upload a photo.
Do NOT keyword stuff your replies.
Keywords only matter in customer-written reviews.
Photos: Low-Hanging SEO Fruit
Best practice:
Add photos weekly.
Match your social posting cadence.
Use real project photos.
Most Important Photo: Cover Image
Use:
Smiling face
Personal headshot
Team photo
Why?
It’s the most viewed image on your profile.
Trust drives clicks.
Google Posts (Underrated Ranking Tool)
Post 2–4 times per month.
Post about:
Completed projects
Before/after
Milestones (like 400 reviews)
Google rewards engagement.
Feed the beast.
Website Matters (Even for Maps Rankings)
Your website supports relevance.
Make sure it:
Lists actual services (deck repair, ceiling fan install, etc.)
Has service area pages
Includes FAQs
Is professionally structured
Website + Google Profile work together.
3️⃣ Prominence: How Well-Known and Trusted You Are
Prominence = reputation signals.
This includes:
Reviews
Backlinks
Citations
Social media activity
Community engagement
Citations & Directory Listings
Make sure your business appears consistently on:
Yelp
Facebook
BBB
Bing Places
Apple Maps
Yellow Pages
MapQuest
Your:
Business name
Phone number
Website
Address
Must match everywhere.
Inconsistent info weakens authority.
Join Local Organizations
High-value local citations:
Chamber of Commerce
Realtor Associations
BNI
Builder groups
Downtown business associations
These scream:
“Real local business.”
Community Engagement = SEO Signal
Sponsor:
Little League
Local charity events
Farmer’s markets
Home shows
Set up a booth.
Most handymen don’t.
You’ll stand out instantly.
Plus:
Social mentions
Backlinks
Brand recognition
Authenticity beats algorithms.
Opening a Second Google Location (Real Talk)
A major question from the webinar.
When It Makes Sense:
You are scaling.
You’re operational in a second area.
It’s 15–20+ miles away.
You have legitimate business documentation tied to the address.
When It Doesn’t:
You’re trying to “hack” rankings.
You won’t actually operate there.
You’re too close to your primary location.
You can’t manage two profiles.
Opening a second profile splits reviews.
If you’re not prepared, it can hurt you.
Seasonality & Slow Periods
Even with strong rankings, slow seasons happen.
November–February is slower in most markets.
Strategies:
Book large remodels for winter.
Build review momentum year-round.
Add complementary marketing channels (email, referral networks, direct mail).
Increase visibility before the slow season.
SEO is long-term equity.
But diversification protects revenue.
The Real Differentiator
When asked:
“What makes you different from other handyman services?”
Avoid generic answers like:
We care.
We show up on time.
We’re reliable.
Instead say:
Licensed & insured up to $2M.
50+ five-star reviews.
Active Chamber member.
Sponsor local youth sports.
Specialize in TV mounting & deck repair.
Specific > Generic.
Ultimately:
Homeowners want someone they trust in their home — even when they’re not there.
Build marketing around trust.
💬 Q&A
Q: If I used my address, can I change to a service area business?
A: Yes. You can hide your address and switch to service area. However, Google still uses your verification address as a proximity factor.
Q: Why would I rank higher in a town 20 miles away than my own?
A: Likely due to lower competition or stronger relevance signals in that area. Google rankings are hyper-local and competition-based.
Q: Can I add Nextdoor as a social profile on Google?
A: No. Currently Google supports:
Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, X, and YouTube — but not Nextdoor.
Q: Does not having business hours hurt rankings?
A: Yes. Google prefers complete profiles.
If you don’t have a storefront, list the hours you’re available to answer calls.
Q: How can I get more customers to leave reviews?
A:
- Send the direct Google review link
- Text it instead of just asking in person
- Follow up 5–7 days later
- Walk them through it when possible
You can also check out our guide on How To Build Google Reviews for more information.
Q: Why is Google denying my photos?
A: Common reasons:
- Phone numbers displayed prominently
- QR codes
- Heavy promotional graphics
- Text overlays
Keep photos clean and natural.
Q: If I serve a large area, can I shift my ranking focal point?
A: No. Google uses your verification address as the proximity center, even if it’s hidden.
Q: What makes a handyman business stand out?
A: Specific operational promises. For example:
- 24-hour estimate turnaround
- Live phone answering
- Clean job-site guarantee
- Specialized service focus
Specific beats vague every time.
